Book Tours
Each year, we host thousands of students on our trails. In 2024, we had 2531 students from 138 classes visit our trails. We hope to have even more students next year! Thanks to our sponsors for helping keep our free school tours program running!

Elementary School Tours
Grades K -2 Tours
Location: Wilson Mountain, 260 Red Bridge Road
Duration: 1 Hour
Trail: Red or Yellow
Bring: Long clothing and bug spray
An easy walk on the shortest trails on the preserve. A few steeper inclines but overall easy and beautiful trails for everyone.
Grades 3-5 Tours
Location: Bell Flats, 112 Bell Settlement Road
Duration: 1 Hour
Trail: Gold
Bring: Long clothing and bug spray
A fairly easy walk on a medium-length trail. This trail has information plaques on it. There is poison ivy at the start of it, so bring pants.
Middle School Workshops
Grade 6 Workshops
Location: Bell Forest, 200 Bell Settlement Road
Duration: 1.5 Hours
Trail: Bell Forest
Bring: Long clothing, bug spray, water and snacks. Workshop materials are provided!
Tree measuring workshop:In this workshop, students take a short walk into our property at Bell Forest. Students learn the basics of tree identification and we discuss the various methods used to determinate the age of a tree. Students then use 3 different pieces of equipment to measure the diameter of a tree.
We also discuss the role trees play in mitigating climate change.
Grade 7 Workshops
Location: Bell Flats, 112 Bell Settlement Road
Duration: 1.5 Hours

Soil monitoring workshop: In this workshop, we dig soil pits and explore how different moisture contents, acidity, and organic matter determine what grows above ground.
This gives students valuable hands-on experience of healthy soil and the role it plays in a biodiverse forest. These workshops compliment and reinforce what the students learn in class.
Grade 8 Workshops

Trail: Yellow/ Orange
Bring: Long clothing, bug spray, water, snacks and boots! Workshop materials are provided!
Water Quality Monitoring: Depending on water levels, this workshop takes place either in
Interrupted Brook on the Yellow trail or in the Meduxnekeag River along the Orange Trail. In this workshop, students wade into the water, use equipment and conduct experiments to measure water temperature, rate of flow, depth, PH and oxygen content. We also discuss how water quality impacts us and the plants and animals that depend on it.

Water-Monitoring Workshop

Water Quality Monitoring: The grade 8 water quality monitoring workshop can be scaled to be more difficult for grade 9 students.
Invasive Species Removal
Location: Vandine Falls, 200 Red Bridge Road
Duration: TBD by teacher
Trail: Orange/purple
Bring: Long clothing, bug spray, gloves
Garlic mustard is invasive and is abundant at Vandine Falls. This workshop teaches them how to identify and remove the plant. Garbage bags for disposal are provided. Only available in May.

Tours

Duration: 1-2 Hours
Trail: Orange
Bring: Long clothing, bug spray
Orange is a more challenging trail than is offered for younger students. If only an hour is available, the gold trail can be walked instead at 112 Bell Settlement Rd.
